Trying to look somewhat okay at school? Me too.

Hi readers :)

This post focuses on me proving to myself that I do indeed have fashion sense and that I know more than dressing like a complete and total slob.

Here, I am imparting my nonexistent wisdom on how to dress for school properly. The truth is, I look homeless almost everyday at school and have a weekly rotation of over-sized t-shirts. But, I want some inspiration too. So here's to putting in a little effort for the end of one of the weirdest school years.

Down below I have listed 10 rough outfit essentials/ambiances for when you're trying to look like you're not trying. Enjoy.

(I also have listed the links for the pictures just in case you wanna match;))

1. A sweat short:

Why continue to wear tight and uncomfortable jean shorts to school, when you can wear the shorts equivalent to sweatpants? These are my new favorite things to wear to school. They'll quite literally change your life. Not only do I feel confident in these shorts, I feel slightly cute. Or maybe that's just me. But no seriously, I love these shorts. They are so comfortable and loose-fitting, with a slight sinch at the waist. I recommend Champion or Nike for some good ones.

2. Flannels/plaids:

I used to have very mixed feelings for flannels and button-up shirts in general, just because I felt like it could go very wrong, very quickly if done wrong. Here's how to do it right: Choose a fun colored plaid; maybe a pastel? Don't dress it up very much. Wearing a flannel with jeans will make you look like either a lumberjack or Nick Miller. Or both. Instead, style it with a casual bottom such as a sweat pant or sweat short ;) Then, make sure to wear some sort of shirt underneath the flannel so you can leave the flannel wide open, making it more casual and treating it as a light layer.

3. An athletic skirt:

I'm not talking about a god awful pleated tennis skirt. Not a sweater vest combo I swear. Instead, I'm talking about a great opportunity to look a little more put together than shorts everyday. A tennis skirt with a nice looking graphic tee or maybe a zip-up sweatshirt and some tennis shoes can make a great outfit for a fashionable day at school. I would suggest to just treat the athletic skirt just as you would if it were a pair of athletic shorts. You don't have to try to hard with it. The skirt will do it for you.

4. Zip-ups:

Brown, green, grey, white, blue, tie dye, etc. I have a lot of zip-ups. These have been a fashion staple for me for years and have always been a go to when I don't know what to wear. Zip-ups are truly so versatile. They are perfect for wearing open with a t-shirt underneath, closed with nothing underneath, or simply on your arm as you walk into school, not sure if its going to be cold or not. Get a zip-up. They are so easy to thrift but also Hanes has great choices too.

5. Colored flare leggings:

A play on the classic lululemon black flare leggings, colorful flares are such an easy way to dress up a casual outfit. You can wear almost anything with these, from a lulu shirt to a graphic tee and zip-up. Or maybe even a flannel? These pants are awesome and will instantly make you seem cooler. That's a guarantee.

6. Layering:

This is a little harder to explain. But like when you wear a longer, bigger t-shirt underneath a more fitted crew neck and it comes out the bottom a little bit. I love that. I think that there is something slightly elevated about layering, even if it doesn't take much effort. This can also be very helpful as you don't have to worry about what to do when you get hot' You can just take one of your layers off.

7. A pop culture graphic tee:

Not a UNC shirt. Not a random t-shirt you caught at a basketball game. I'm talking a nicely over-sized graphic tee from your favorite band, movie, tv show, play, etc. I want to know things like are you team Edward or team Jacob or if you believe in Larry just from looking at your t-shirt. I want to know something interesting about you when I look at your t-shirt, not just that your dad used to play baseball at NC State. Invest in a good pop culture tee. It'll do wonders for your outfits and style at school. And it virtually feels the same if not better than those random t-shirts you have been wearing. So why not. (Side note: If you are going to invest in a band tee from Urban Outfitters, please make sure you know the band. That smiley face design isn't supposed to be cute, it's for Nirvana)

8. High-tops:

I've always been a big fan of a high top. Personally, I seem to gravitate to a white high-top with some sort of design on them, but do whatever you like. Converses are really sick. They're comfortable and cute and cute and comfortable. You'll look cool and everyone will think that you look put together just because your not wearing crocs or air forces.

9. Straight-legged sweatpants:

Sweatpants are difficult to make cute. I'm not a huge jogger person myself and find it so tempting to just wear the baggiest sweats I own. But, I have a solution. I think that a slightly fitted, straight-legged sweat pant can really do the trick. These give your pants some uniqueness as your not wearing what everyone else is. A sinched sweat pant leg can make your pants look like balloon pants and can not work quite right with shoes. But a straight-legged sweat pant will do both your legs and shoes justice. I think a charcoal color would be really cute.

10. A saucy cardigan:

Last one, I promise. This kinda goes back to layering and light layers for summer. A crocheted cardigan can look so good with really anything for school. It could work with an athletic skirt, a pair of sweat shorts, or even straight-legged sweat pants. Think, the weirder the cardigan the better. I want to see fun patterns, flowers, smiley faces, etc. Paired with a good pop culture graphic tee and a pair of sweat-shorts, this could be a great fit.
